To start with, this story has nothing to do with savings. Although I did make $400.
My little cabin is nestled between a 25,000 acre cattle property and a little over 30,000 acres of forestry and logging land.
I have a little 5 acre parcel carved out on the side of this mountain in a dip on an old dirt road that is mostly used by logging trucks and the odd ATV from the cattle farmers. My closest neighbour is a few Km's down the road. That neighbour is an elderly man in his late 80's who is mostly housebound - he has a nurse that pops out a couple times a week to help him with the things he may need, the rest of the time he sits on his porch and watches his horses.
I'm telling you this because I need you to understand just how few people there should be in this immediate area.
My cabin is set right at the back of my property, I can see my fence and the forestry land from my kitchen window. My home is not visible from the road, But at just the right angle you can just catch a glimpse of a old falling down carport and ancient truck underneath. But with the overgrown plants, vines and bougainvilleas you would drive right by the gate unless you were really looking for it.
Because of this perceived isolation since purchasing the cabin I've seen no need to add window coverings - I love looking out into the lush green gardens I've it said before, its like my own little secret rainforest. I'll admit, sometimes I'm pretty lax about clothing it wouldn't be uncommon for me to walk around in my knickers or take a leisurely nudie walk from the bathroom to my bedroom with little concern. I'm the only one here, so who cares!?
I have also commented and added photos of the beautiful view from my bathroom window.... can you see where this is going?
This image bellow is my view from the bathroom, I affectionately referred to it as my "Loo, with a view".
I have bush turkeys and their chicks, wallabies and echidnas in my garden and have seen them all plodding around this leafy spot during the day.
What you can not see in this photo taken through my bathroom window is the electrical box that is situated on the outside wall too the left.
Now, the way the cabin is set up is semi off grid, but still with a connected to the electrical grid. I have electricity bills but it's low only $60-70 a month.
I used my air-conditioner over the summer and it seems a more than reasonable price.
So, If I'm going 100% honest i've never even opened the electrical box to look at it.
But the meter man did last week, and he got quite the eyeful.
I was absolutely mortified.
So, for days afterwards I was so embarrassed.
I set the security cameras to alert when a car enterers the driveway, so now if I car passes the gate an alarm will sound inside the house. I also hung a towel over my bathroom window. I figured that would do until I can decide on what window covering I'd like in there long term. Problem fixed! No Cars sneaking up the driveway without me knowing and no awkward eye contact with the meter reader while i'm on the loo. Sorted, right?
Now in that moment I briefly contemplated if I should get curtain or blinds for the whole house. But apart from the meter guy, who else could possibly wander out this far?
We've had a lot of rain the past few weeks and it's been lovely, the sound of the rain on the tin roof, everything wet and fresh smelling. It's been the perfect weather for staying curled up in bed so I decided that's how I would spend my day - curled up in bed...with a companion. I'm going to hope you can pick up the subtext of what might have been happening here. Myself and said gentleman enjoying the day in bed in my room, like all the others rooms in my home.... without curtains.
Maybe a hour earlier I had confessed to him what happened with the meter reader and he laughed, admitting when he'd been over before he too has enjoyed a naked walk through the house and that it just feels so private out here, what are the chances. We had a good laugh at my embarrassment and the day went on.
---- This is were we might hit "Too much Information" and Possibly "Not Safe for Work" territory, Or if you get uncomfortable with Ben Stiller levels of embarrassment you might want to stop here ----
Ladies, I will not lie too you, I am a woman who likes to take charge. Which is what I was doing when I heard a voice from just outside my bedroom window "HEEEELLLLLLOOO". At that moment my soul left my body. I pulled up the sheets to cover myself but that just exposed my partner. The visitor just stood there awkwardly looking around, pretending he didn't just get a private peepshow through my bedroom window, as if he didn't see our predicament. The man was maybe 4 meters away. We'd made bloody eye contact. God, I wanted to vanish, any normal person would have been mortified to come across this scene and left. But I was not dealing with a normal person. He just stood there and waited until I realised he wasn't going to leave until someone came out to talk to him.
It was a long stretch to reach my dressing gown without falling from the bed. A not so brave companion hiding under the blankets now mumbling "you've got to be kidding?, now?, really?!". It was clear he was not to be my saviour. So with false dignity I pulled on the robe and went outside to find out what was so important that this random man had wandered onto my property, in the middle on bloody nowhere and refused to leave.
I walk out. He looks at me, his a little red in the face now. Good, he should be embarrassed - I am.
"Can I help you?" I ask in the most casual tone I could manage.
" Yeah," he says..... "Would you take $100 for that old truck? I noticed its just been sitting there for awhile and I've seen it on my way to work"
Oh god, this is worse than I thought. He either works on the cattle farm or with the forestry, and as I said when you go by the property if your looking at just the right angle you can see the old carport and truck.
Me, contemplating for a moment if I can haggle him upto $400 - before my brain kicks in WTF are you doing girl.
Comes up with a story on the fly, not wanting another local guy to know there's a weird naked woman who lives here (Which is funny, because the old owner who passed away was known as the weird "naked guy" - but he bathed in the creek outdoors on the fence line during logging season. Or so that story goes.)
So I say "Oh that's my boyfriends, he's at work, but if you give me your number I'll have him message you when he gets home"... now in my head I think I'm letting this guy know there is a man that lives here and he's my "boyfriend". He looked puzzled for a moment and I realise he's probably wondering who's that in bed if my boyfriend isn't here at the moment.
I don't know what I was thinking. I just didn't want him to know that A. I'm a woman, who partial to frolicking around naked and B. I'm alone out here.
Anyway ... Thats how I got this guys phone number and sold my old truck.
