You can buy the best meat ever at Lindens! Fresh, preservative free (as much as possible- they state you have to freeze or cook the mince on same day as purchase, as there are no preservatives). The chicken breast they sell is amazing - hormone free, and they always have specials. Best of all, they will deliver virtually anywhere in Melbourne, and if you spend enough in one go, delivery is free![less]
either their bulk packs - they will edit them for your preferences, or online go to their pick-a-pack section or daily specials
Chung Vinh Phat is packed full of Asian goodies including cooking utensils, fresh vegetables, frozen goods and all the usual Asian cooking needs.
My favourite section is that they have the best rice pasta - $2.50 for 400g! A huge saving compared to the supermarket. Even better, this pasta freezes really well so you can use it for cooking prepared meals without thinking you will end up with slosh. Check it out![less]
This one is on the shelf - $2.50 for 400g is $0.63 per 100g. Compare that to the supermarket!
Katies is a popular fashion chain, so this information may well apply to all branches. I source all my work clothes here for an extremely good price. They throw out 'out of season' stock all the time but we are talking about navy blue and black pants and jackets, which are not really out of fashion, just a season old. I pick up pants and jackets for about $20 each and often when you buy two items you get a further discount. I also buy my casual clothes there and can pick up tops for as little as $5.95. My daughter needed black pants for work recently. I headed straight to Katies and picked up two pairs of linen pants for her for $10 the lot! Even current season stock is discounted most of the time, so you can always find a bargain.[less]
Just sort through the clothes on the discounted rack.
Clear It is the place to shop for heavily discounted clothes from hip designers. Here you can find brands such as Soup, Revival, Dangerfield, Pulp Kitchen, Princess Highway, Coo Ca Choo and Alannah Hill. Pick up an all-Australian frock for just a few dollars! Venture upstairs for some excellent bargains.[less]
To get the best price, buy the beautiful perfect quality Alannah Hill fabric and make your own clothes out of it. You can find some really simple patterns online (most of her stuff isn't too complicated) and save yourself literally hundreds of dollars per piece, look fantastic, and be very proud of yourself too!
The Fruit Shack is a store that always has lots of fruit and vegetables on special, although I find any independent fruit and vegetable shop pretty good depending on their location. Obviously those within shopping centres can at times be as pricey as the major supermarkets themselves! However, I can definitely recommend the Fruit Shack for competitive prices.[less]
Keeping an eye out for up and coming bargains.
The St Vincent de Paul store in Geelong is a awesome thrift shop. They sell good quality clothing, as well as toys, homewares and manchester. A great place to grab a bargain![less]
Depending on the week will depend on what is on sale but one thing they have got on a regular basis is their $3 clothing rack and they rely on their staff to keep pricing just low enough to please customers but not to low to make enough of a profit. Also you can ask the staff to hold items till you have the money.
I live approx 150km away from Shepparton, but even doing my maths considering my fuel costs and so on, I'm still way out in front with the load of food I purchased from Ardmona!
All the items I purchased were Aussie made, and most are well within their use by date. Do your homework first by checking out their website to check out their specials at that particular time.
For example I purchased:
12 snack packs of apple/banana/strawberry puree for $4.00
12 x LARGE (790g) tins of pears in juice for $7.50
24 small snack packs of pears/two fruits in passionfruit or tropical jelly for $5.00
12 x 425g cans of baked beans for $5.00 lot
Large jars Australian jams for $1.00 and $1.50
Pre-cooked rice pouches (ready to heat) from $1.00
35 Chupa Chups for $2.50
8 x packs of delicious 'VERI DELI' snack biscuits for $7.00
The list is endless, but they have a wide range of items, not just fruit. If you spend over $70 they also give you a 5% discount if you have an RACV card.
I have enough different varieties of fruit and meal bases in my pantry to last right over the winter months. I spent $112, but have calculated that even with fuel costs I have saved double to triple that compared to what I would pay elsewhere and on things I would normally buy anyway.
Check out the website frequently to see if it's worth a trip up there![less]
Check out the website frequently.
Here you will find farm supplies but much, much more! I get 25kg of feed grade quality bicarb soda for use in cleaning. They also have a large supply of bulk pet food and garden things. Simply drive in and load up (or the guys will help you do it).[less]
Bulk buying helps but have a chat with the guys as they nearly always have some give away from some company which is promoting something.
Bare Skin & Beauty is a beauty salon where they have everything from waxing to facials, massage, spray tanning, pedicures and manicures and professional make up services for weddings debutantes or that special occasion. Great service with friendly professional staff.[less]

This is a great place to pick up cheap 'brand name' perfumes. Keep them in mind, especially around Mothers Day's, Father's Day and Christmas![less]
Look at the specials marked with big stickers showing the heavily reduced savings.
By doing my fortnightly shop at Maxi's instead of Safeway and ALDI, I save between $50 and $100 each fortnight, while buying the same food items!
Sadly now closed![less]
Always check the use by date!!!
This is an online shopping site. You can visit to collect your goods if you wish but for bulk items being sent to the Metro area up to 20kg is around $12.50 or $13. They have a garage sale area and specials are frequent. Service is very good too. For very good quality bed linen it is cheaper than going to a retail shop. It is best to contact the shop before visiting. Contact and map and directions are on the website.
It certainly is worth a look![less]
Regular perusing of the website's garage sale area will definitely tempt anyone looking for a bargain.
Hush A Bye is great for all things baby. You can check out their range online and order it for delivery. They did stock the brands that I was interested in, although the range may be a bit less extensive than Baby Bunting. BUT the online prices are generally cheaper than the bigger stores. PLUS if you go into the store and speak with the lovely chappie who works there you can ask for the best price which was cheaper again. The item you want may need to be ordered in so ensure that you get it on time.[less]
I was told by another Mum to go into the store and ask for the best price. My friend had bought several items but I was only ordering a pram. The price he gave me was about $30 less than the online price (as they don't have to organise the delivery) but overall it was about $50-$60 cheaper than Baby Bunting.
Beautifully fresh meats acquired from local farmers. They also stock fish. Super friendly people, highly recommended for quality and service![less]
Order in bulk once a month or once a quarter and they will give you the specials they have planned during that period.
You will also generally get a few freebies like extra sausages and free range eggs, soup bones, etc.
Ray's sells not only nuts but also dried and glace fruit, dried pulses and many other items in bulk. He also sells a great range of herbs and spices. All the nuts are roasted on the premises and they also have great honey at the best price we can find in Melbourne. Everything is so fresh as the turnover is high. Check it out![less]
The prices are all the best.
Clayton Fabrics is located near the Dandenong Plaza and has a huge range of exciting fabrics at the best prices in the south east. There is lots of glitter, micro dot, sheer embroidered fabrics and much more, all at such reasonable prices. It makes your head spin when you walk in, you just want to buy it all!
The more you buy, the bigger the discount you get. The only downside is they are a CASH ONLY outlet, no ATM facilities available. Although the good side to that is you can only spend what you have in your purse![less]
You don't have to even haggle the guy will give you a discount without even asking.
Diana Ferrari is THE place to buy lovely shoes at a fraction of the normal retail price - even if you have big feet (size 10 or 11) like me! I always buy my shoes from this shop - they have the latest styles, and I the think the most I have ever paid was $70. EVERY pair has lasted for ages and ages, and I thrash my shoes![less]
Just pop in!
Attached to Hardwicks Meat Works is their factory shop. Here you can get amazing value on meat if you don't mind buying in bulk. Most meats are almost half the price of what you pay in the butcher shop, and come vacuum packed so they last for a while in the fridge if you don't open them. It's a great idea to portion the meat and freeze what you are not using straight away. They also sell bacon and other pork products, frozen fish and chicken. All the meat is stored in a cool room, and you wheel your trolley around in it - so take a jacket, it gets cold![less]
Fantastic friendly service and FRESH cooked food. They have free tea and coffee - even if that is all you want they will direct you to these first, unless you want a cappuccino or other 'special' coffee, then you pay. We highly recommend stopping in at the Serpentine Roadhouse for food, drink, toilet stop or fuel. Don't confuse it with the one on the other side of the road![less]
For excellent bargains I usually purchase from the Md stall at nearby Laverton Market, where the owners sell their products on weekends. You can get great prices on toilet npaper, dishwashing liquid, paper towels, laundry powder and disinfectant. For example, you can get 20 litres of dishwashing liquid for $25. It comes in big drums and I buy it once a year, as long as my husband doesn't forget to close the spiggot and let it run out on the garage floor![less]
Weekdays you can buy from the above address.
Unique Glass Design isn't an actual shop but a registered business run by two glaziers with many years experience. They specialise in:
- glass splashbacks
- shower screens
- glass balaustrading
They do a beautiful job, they are prompt which is very important, and will undercut any quote you can get. Just ring them for a prompt quote anywhere in Melbourne metropolitan area. If unsure, just ring them and see if they will come to you. Phone Mark - 0423 068 730 or Shaun 0419 110 060[less]

Bevilles is a jeweller that sells more than jewellery. Here you will find gifts at reasonable prices, such as Maxwell Williams mug sets for $20 or plates, bowls and pasta sets for $10+. Perfect for weddings and engagement parties![less]

My naughty 'hidden gem' store - confectionery made on site and sold direct to the public![less]
1kg to 5kg bags of lollies. Perfect for parties or keeping a stash in your drawer at work.
This is a great little hairdressing and beauty salon in a country town. The cuts and colours are terrific and the prices amazing! You won't get these prices in the city! It's a good place to relax and chat with staff who treat you as if they've known you forever and are on for a good yarn. Karen and Meg have a keen eye and will offer suggestions of style and colouring and you walk out feeling like a million bucks! It took me years to find someone who can do that. They also tell you how to care for your hair without pushing any products on you. The extra services such as straightening and special styling (especially for the teenage girls who go in for just a trim but come out with fancy styling) don't cost any extra. The salon caters for the whole family and on Tuesday no appointments are necessary. Beauty treatments and massages are also available from a qualified therapist.
Phone (03) 5456 4752[less]
You don't need to do anything special to get their cheap prices - it's all part of the service.
Toni is the best hairdresser! I have been going to her for years. She has done countless up-dos for me for special occasions and helped me change my hairstyle when I had no idea what to do with it. She is lovely to chat to, remembers everything I tell her for next time, and doesn't scold when I come in way overdue for a cut and my fringe is embarassingly long![less]
A regular trim is about $25 and I think she is totally worth it! Make sure you go in with clean hair and if they ask you whether you want it washed say no or be prepared to pay a fair bit extra.
I have been seeing Betty for my acrylic nails and waxing for over five years and I cannot recommend her services highly enough. I constantly get compliments on my beautifully painted natural nails and take great delight in telling people that the nails are actually acrylics! Betty uses the high end non-toxic Creative Nails brand, and also does waxing for myself and my partner. Every couple of months I have a lovely pampering pedicure from her. Betty is helpful and no-nonsense with a great sense of humour and is without a doubt the best nail technician and waxer I have ever had. Yes, you can get cheaper services from the Asian nail bars or you can spend a lot more with another Creative Nails technician but they still won't be as good. For the price, Betty's work is superb. Highly recommended by a complete control freak who has to have her nails and everything else just so![less]
Betty has been known to give a bit off the total to repeat clients if they have multiple services, but it would be very poor manners to try to barter with her from the offset. Her prices are very good value!
Tania is a young hairdresser just starting out in her own business, however, she and her staff provide fantastic service and great haircuts. They only accept cash but the savings are worth it. I have my short hair cut and streaked every month for a total of $55![less]
Don't let the name of the store put you off! You can buy one-kilo packs of meat there too! At Lilydale you sign up and get a member's card. Each time you shop, they keep a tally of how much you spend. When you've spent $500 on meat (and who doesn't with growing children!), you get FREE MEAT! The ladies are helpful, and you can substitute chuck steak for gravy beef and not know the diference! Try them, they're great![less]

Now with CUPCAKES in the Coffee Shop - mmm
Being of European heritage I get quite hairy! I have known Hayley Kraulis for nearly 5 years now and have always gone to her for all my waxing needs! We met when she first started and before either of us had kids. :)
She works from home which is nice and relaxing and very comfortable. She is friendly and geninue and also offers other services such as tanning, makeup acrylic nails and manicures and pedicures on top of waxing.[less]
Before I met her it would cost me over $70 just to get a full leg wax (no bikini) but at Hayley's I can get a full leg wax, bikini line, underarm, upper lip and arms done for less and be left with change.
I would highly recommend her to anyone who needs to wax (shaving is not an option for me) as not only will you save money but you will walk out feeling wonderful! ;)

This op shop has really good stuff. It doesn't have that op shop "smell" and all the clothes are scrutinised before they go into the shop. I do about 95% of my clothes shopping there. In the interests of full disclosure, I do volunteer there half a day a wek. The volunteers aren't allowed to buy anything before it's been in the shop for two days and we are told that if an item comes in that we would not be happy wearing, (in terms of quality) we throw it out and don't put it in the shop.[less]
Their prices are reasonable and with the exception of wedding dresses the most expensive clothes item in the shop is $10, (winter coat).
Open Monday to Friday only - 10am to 3pm[less]
It's A Community Store. The store is run for the benefit of the Ballarat community; staff are all volunteers. The store is run to break even only.
Who is behind it? The store is a joint community project of Wendouree West Community Renewal, UnitingCare and St Vincent de Paul Society.
Can I save money? We compared the prices of some basic stock lines with competitors and there is the potential to save by visiting regularly. The stockist appears to be IGA.
This is a warehouse catering to Middle Eastern cookery with a large range of dry goods as well as tinned items many in catering sizes. It is a veritable Aladdin's cave of common nuts, grains and spices and a glimpse of an exotic world of less well known ingredients. I buy 2kg yoghurt for $5.00 (half the supermarket price) as well as bread flour and much more. They are open six days a week.[less]
Recycled Textbooks specialises in second hand school books for secondary schools in Victoria. You can buy and sell your textbooks and out of date books are donated to World Vision. Books are priced according to condition. It is a small store so be prepared to wait in the busy season but the saving can be worth it. They will also post books out.[less]
Casey does eyelash extensions in her home salon, which only costs $85 instead of the $110+ that other salons are charging. The service is friendly and professional and nothing is too much touble. She also does waxing, (men & women) spray tanning, manicures and pedicures. I had lash extensions done for New Year's Eve and am now a convert! Her phone no is 8790 0475 or 0418 127 808.[less]
Premium quality disposable nappies and wipes. Snookums brand. New to Australia. Haven't seen it sold in shops yet. You can order online from the website. Free delivery for Queensland area. They have a few stockists. Prices are quite cheap and competitive. Nappies come in four different sizes (newborn to extra large). Prices range from $27.50 to $36.00 for a box of 100. You can also ask for samples. Wipes come in two sizes, e.g. a pack of 80 for $2.50.[less]
Register on the website for specials. Also if you are in the Northern Suburbs, Melbourne, give them a call on 0403221283/99421509 as they offer even more discount on the listed price.
DFO (Direct Factory Outlets) Moorabbin claim to have 100 Big Brands with up to 70% off. My shopping experience last weekend confirms this.
I was sauntering around actually looking for a pair of Globe shoes for a male relative. I found what I wanted within 10 mins for $79 which was $60 less than the RRP of $139.
We must have still be in shoe mode when we came across Colorado. This brand is well known to us and we do buy most of our shoes from Colorado but in the normal retail stores. At the back of my mind I had been looking for two types of shoes which I was going to try to get online to save money, but because I have 'tricky' feet, I didn't actually order.
The selection at Colorado was huge and they were already discounted PLUS another 30% off the discounted price. Here I picked up a cute pr of walking shoes with all those adjustable little straps to make your fit perfect (exactly what I was after online) $109 down to $34.48 saving $74.52. Also I could not go past a nice pr of ballet flats made of black leather with some fancy cutouts $109 down to $34.97 also saving $74. Just perfect for autumn with my 7/8th pants or leggings.
My DH found some good quality shorts. One at $13.97 down from $60 and a high end pair for $34.97 down from $89.
Our total bill was $118.39. We made a massive saving and it also saved me the headache of buying shoes online and the uncertaintly that comes with that (i.e. are they actually comfortable? Remember my tricky feet?) I got to try before I bought.
I was very happy with my items as they were exactly what I had been looking for at great savings. Don't go to the regular store. Try DFO. I recommend this Hidden Gem store.[less]
Service was basically self service, although the staff did come to see how you were going from time to time. Everything was there though and the staff were quite friendly. There was no special time, alth weekend. We must have been there at the end of the season,so there was the extra 30% off an already heavily discounted product.
Good range of children's clothing (used and new) plus toys and books. Also has good ideas for gifts for children's birthday parties.[less]
Keep an eye out for the end of season sales. Also the specials rack is great for everyday clothing.
I recently went here with my three children to stock up on school shoes and runners and managed to buy six pairs of shoes for $150! The service was fantastic and the shoes are great quality.[less]
Their shoes are always well priced!
Preston Market has excellent prices for fresh meat and fish. The vegetables are also well priced. The market has clothing stalls too, but really it's the food I visit for. I grew up in the area and even though I'm on the other side of town, there is not anything to compare it to.[less]
Just go and look! Like most markets, there will be markdowns of fresh fruit and veg towards the end of the day. Not sure about the meat or fish.
This store is great for party food, has wonderful products and great brands at a fraction of the price of supermarkets. My favourite are the Patties Lamb & Rosemary party pies. They also do party packs cheaply. They have a butcher onsite and sell bulk frozen vegetables. The staff are helpful and will even carry the stuff to your car if you have too much to carry. The best thing is they open at 7am on Saturday mornings.[less]
This store offers fundraising for schools and kinders and when it is set up you get 5% discount and the school or kinder also gets a 5% rebate.
Young friendly talented hairdresser with great prices. A cut, colour, foils and blowwave for medium to long hair costs just $80 and kids' hair cuts are $12.[less]
I came across this little gem when I was working at one of the local hospitals. I was about to call into Coles to buy some supplies on my way home to feed my toddlers and husband. As I was walking through the shopping centre I was thinking about how life is so fast-paced, and wishing I could save time and feed the family with nutricious foods (they were gettng tired of take aways at this stage!).
Then suddenly, right before my very eyes, I came across a deli that had fresh pasta, sauces, meat balls, chicken schnitzel, piza bases, and so on, all at excellent prices. I enquired about the food and was told, by the lovely Michelle, that her mum, an excellent Italian cook from way back, cooked everything on site fresh every day.
Well now I go there twice a week to pick up fresh meals for the family on the way home and have dinner on the table in no time.
Thanks Michelle and Mum for the great food and excellent price and service[less]
They have reasonable prices all the time.
This is a cheese factory outlet, which takes cash only and is open Mondays 12-1 pm. The stock varies from week to week. For example- here are some of the deals you can pick up:
Fetta 180g $2.45, 2kg $17.40,
Haloumi 180g $1.00
flavoured cream cheese $1.00
yoghurt 5kg $10.70
There are more items and sizes available[less]
Some items are sold because they are underweight. You can get great bargains on big sizes, but very limited stock.
I drive ten minutes every week to get my fruit and vegies from CK Foodstores. Whenever I go to a local fruitshop I am shocked by the high prices compared to what I spend in CK foodstores because, other then the markets, it is the cheepest shop I know of in the inner city/south eastern suburbs. Here, the prices are very good and I get so much more for my money. They always have various discounted fruits and vegies by the cash regisiter which are great for cooking in bulk and making items such as apple sauce. Parking is always easy to find within the huge parking lot.[less]
This market is is a greengrocer, bakery, deli and supermarket all rolled into one and run by friendly, helpful Greek people. It sells fresh fruit and vegetables, bread, European food, household products, cleaning products, party items and so on. The fruit and veg are quite cheap compared to supermarkets and the staff provide cheerful, helpful service.[less]
This store is small but sells bulk frozen veggies and other assorted frozen goods. Some are brand name such as Edgell, McCain etc. There are also generic bags. I just picked up a 2.5kg bag of frozen chopped red and green capsicum (Edgell brand) for $5, amongst lots of other bulk goodies. They also sell lots of frozen seafood, pies, chips, wedges and desserts.
The other great thing is that they provide a little basket of toys and a small area for the kids to play. I take my 5 and 3 year old children, and they are happy to play while I peruse and shop.
I was told by another friend (who put me onto them), that this company supplies to NQR and other bulk stores, but they have a retail outlet. Very impressed with service and prices. You can pay by eftpos (cashcard and credit card) as well as cash. It's less than 10mins out of Cranbourne, and well worth it if you're stocking up!
They are only open Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, from 9:30am (unsure of closing time).[less]
Just turn up. I don't think you'd get much better than the listed prices!
Plant Inspirations is a fantastic business that sells plants via ebay. They always offer amazing customer service and fantastic prices on all of their plants. They also charge very reasonable rates for postage!!!
The business is run by two mums who started their business from home so that they could look after their seven children and still generate an income. I have found them to be very friendly, fast, and keen to deliver whatever I'm looking for. If they do not have a listing for the combination of plants that you are looking for, they will even put together a special package on request.
If you are a keen gardener or looking to start a new garden from scratch (like me), then I believe that these ladies provide the best value for money plants around!!![less]
When you buy anything online the postage can really add up. Plant Inspirations charges a maximum of $19 for postage (even if you buy hundreds of plants) so the best way to keep the cost down is to buy what you need in bulk (most of the plants are between $2-3 each) or to combine your order with another keen gardener and get the most that you can out of the postage.
I like this site because it is free to use and very easy. Here you can sell and buy second hand baby items and not need pay high fees for it. It's just AUD$2.50 for each ad you place and they don't charge any fees for extra photos or features. The people who run the site are a couple who are parents themselves as well so they understand a parent's needs. This is a Hidden Gem because it is very new, not many people know about it, and I have found very good bargains through it. It's really worth a look.[less]
You do not need to do anything to get the best price. You only pay the price of the item, and if the person who is selling it is open to negotiation you can use your bargaining skills to get a better deal! You can save a lot of money buying second hand items.
This store stocks feed for just about every animal. It's a shed at the back of Tarneit and although it does not look like much from the outside, once you are inside you'll see they have a huge about of differant animal feeds, and also birds and chicken if you are looking to buy them too. The staff are alway there to help you with the prices, (although they can get a little busy on a Saturday morning) and their prices are great too.[less]
Just ask for the best price. Last week I got a 22kg bag of dry dog food that is normally $39.95 at Mega Pet Warehouse for only $25.00 and a 40kg bag of wheat for only $18.00!!
Lilly is great! She offers all beauty services from hair to waxing, hair-ups to professional make up. All at great prices and she is extremely friendly. You can generally get an appointment within 24 hours for all services.[less]
When calling to make a booking you can get a quote over the phone. Prices are always super cheap for all services.
To make a booking you just need to call Lilly on 03 9741 7804
This is a local nursery run by a young couple who are friendly and so helpful. I find the quality and price of plants compares as well as Bunnings without the cost of petrol. There are few nurseries in our area partly due to the drought, so to me this a Godsend. I wanted to buy some tea herbs to help me cut caffiene, what wasn't in stock was gladly ordered for me. Whilst there, the young owner offered me some herbs for free, and vegetable seedlings which were about to be thrown out because of yellowing outer leaves. (As they only like to sell healthy looking plants they felt these plants were of no use.) I offered a small amount which was only accepted after my persistance, and I now have a vegie garden full of cauliflower, brocc, beetroot, spring onions , silverbeet all growing happily for $5.00. I feel it is important to support these local industries which not only save time and petrol cost, but the owners do look after you.[less]
The nursery is open most days, is clean and well set out, which makes it a pleasure to wander around. The plants for quick sale are at the back of the nursery and well worth a look.
I buy all my manures, mushroom compost, pea straw from these suppliers. I saw the advertisement in the local paper, and found the cost to be under half of our local Mitre10 store. There is a mnimum 10 bag order, plus small delivery cost proved to be well worth while. The products are of excellent quality. They are also makers of olive oil, which is really great, and for my loyalty the Christmas before last I was rewarded with a bottle of their cabernet, which was well received. The wine sells for about $10.00 per bottle, the pinot noir being our favourite. They have cow, sheep and chicken manures (the last time I purchased the manures, the cost was $5,50 a bag) they also supply blood & bone, mushroom compost, potting mix, Euca Mulch and pea straw.[less]
I found the couple who run this business to be most helpful, and ready to give good advice about applying the manure etc. The order is delivered to the door and in good condition. Their phone no is 59644846 or 0408101485
Mill Park, Brunswick, Dandenong, Footscray, Frankston, Greensborough and Shepparton, Victoria, and Noarlunga, SA.
Savers is my FAVOURITE shop. Its basically like a recycled clothes & homewares superstore. Many people run in the other direction when you mention op-shopping, but this place makes it fun. It's a massive store with all of the clothes in sections - Womens, Mens & Children - and then its categorised by the type of item it is - Pants, Skirts, Jackets, Vests, Long Sleeve, Shirts, Eveningwear, the list goes on.
There are a lot of items that are the worst of the 80's and 90's - great for a giggle - but there are some magnificent items to be found, both current and vintage, from all the known labels - Cotton On, Supre, City Chic, Kmart, Target, Sportsgirl, Portmans, Myer, Katies, and so on.
But best of all - sometimes there are fantastic designer goods too. I found a pair of Grey satin Wayne Cooper pants for the bargain price of $10. A silk vintage Chanel maxi dress for $20 (during their half price sale!) and a near-new pair of Christian Louboutin heels for $150 (retail upwards of $900 for brand new).
If you take the time, and have some fun, you can unearth some amazing pieces that will complement you and your wardrobe. Its a great way to update your wardrobe for a fraction of the price!
There are various stores across Vitoria and one in SA. (All are outlined on the website.)
Victoria: Mill Park, Brunswick, Dandenong, Footscray, Frankston, Greensborough and Shepparton.
Although their prices are pretty low to start with, they often have great sales (sometimes during the week) such as 20% off, 50% off and they also have special discount days for seniors. They also have spot specials, where they'll tell you over the voiceover what todays special is - it might be 5 pairs of pants for $20, or it might be 'buy 3 skirts and save 15%'.
They also have a special rewards card. Take your donations to one of the counters when you arrive, and they will stamp your discount card, which ranges from 5% - 25% off your next purchase!
Happy choice is a great and cheap shop for when you need a last minute gift, dress ups for the kids, sunnys and/or glasses and much much more! I myself shop their all the time!!![less]
Their is no potion or charm to get the best price, this store is just so cheap and has great quality stuff!!!
Our family use this web site to order second hand or new books at fabulous prices. Sometimes they can take a while to get to you but the saving is worth the wait . I recently ordered a book (that cost $26 at full retail price) through Betterworldbooks and it cost me just $13.70! It was second hand but it was in such great condition that I wouldn't have known!.[less]
Easy! Type in the name of the book, find the best price and follow the direction to order.
This is a great place to buy food for catering. Chicken is often $6.95 a kilo & bulk rump $5.99 a kilo, they regularly have stock at clearance prices. Also buy my legumes here in bulk. Staff are very friendly.[less]
Go in regularly as they have different stock on clearance at a fraction of the normal price!
Merge is a clothing store in the centre of Footscray. They have fantastic deals on unique clothing items. I recently bought a warm winter coat for only $20 and the material is great quality.
Not many people know about this store, and not many people know how cheap my clothing is![less]
The items are heavily discounted in the off seasons - so buy winter clothing in summer, and summer clothing in winter and you will save a lot
We visited this store which sells boat and yacht equipment and found the staff to be extremely helpful and knowledgable. They will always tell you if you are buying something that is not going to suit your needs. We just can't fault their friendliness and conscientious approach to making a visit to the store a pleasure![less]
I find if we want something from this store, it is good to buy more than one item at once, save up and buy several items - better price discounts.
Moodis Cafe is a hidden gem in country town Pearcedale on the Mornington Peninsula. With a diverse menu encompassing italian inspired pub style food, servings are plentiful. My partner and I often purchase a single meal to share and have recently taken to bringing home takeaway, boiling up some extra pasta and making a main feed two people twice. A little off the beaten track, the prices and quality of food attract sales reps from everywhere as a delicious and cost effective cafe. Breakfasts to dinners, I reccommend the lot![less]
From $7.00 for an entree, affordable is the word of the day. Breakfast is a winner, in my opinion, so before 10.30am is my vote!
This store has a great range of dried beans, lentils and other similar dried goods at fantastic prices. They also sell dry herbs and spices, yoghurt, fetta, olives, dried fruit and preserved vine leaves for making Dolmades. All of these are at very good prices too. A favourite of mine is the broken chick peas at about $1.50 a kilo. They make great hummus! What makes it worth my while returning frequently is the price of bread flour. I buy a 25kg bag for $25! I make most of our bread and use this amount in good time, but they also sell 12kg bags cheaply. They always have very cheap pitta bread too at $1 a bag. We live in the country, but when we are in Melbourne I try to get there to stock up. The staff are friendly and helpful and will help you get your shopping to your car, especially if you buy a big bag of flour![less]
The prices here are always good. No need to do anything special.
Casalare are an Australian owned and operated innovative manufacturer of premium gluten free pasta and baking products. The brand is sold in health food stores, some supermarkets and specialty outlets through a network of distributors in Australia, New Zealand and some export markets, as well as online.
I love that they are Australian (with so many food factories closing, this is very important), and have a 'country' style attitude - friendly, open and happy to help. I also love that they are investing in the environment, with things like their new solar conveyor drier to reduce their power consumption.
While they are not the cheapest if buying with the retailer's mark-up, buying in bulk directly from them makes them perfectly affordable, and they make excellent quality gluten free pasta and bakery products. I had been buying their pasta for years having tried all different brands in the health food shop, found them the best. Choosing products from their website, then buying over the phone, and having free delivery direct to my door, I'm saving heaps and loving the products.[less]
Their products are available to be delivered to your door directly from the manufacturer, buying online or by phone, with cheap freight and free freight when purchasing over $50 ($80 Tasmania and country areas) which is easy to do if buying in bulk.
Sort of like a scaled down NQR, this hidden gem of a store sells branded and some imported products at less of the RRP. There are canned goods, snacks, frozen foods, softdrinks, chocolates and so on, sold often at less than or at half price. The food is often close to, or past (and sometimes way past) its expiry date so just make sure you check the due dates or judge if the product will still be fine if it has expired.
Bulk buys are also applicable, so you could pick up, say, a slab of soft drinks or a whole carton of noodles for a fraction of what they cost in regular supermarkets. Or you could buy three or more of a product for the price of one (applicable especially for snacks). The specials vary each week, and the turnover is quite high, especially for the chilled products. $50 would go a very long way in this store.
This place is a junk foodie's paradise! You'll find lots of cheese, confectionery, cereals, biscuits, juice, icecreams, softdrinks and other frozen and tinned goods here. Very tempting to splurge in this place!
TRADING HOURS: MON-WED 9-7 PM, THUR-FRI 9-8 PM, SAT 8.00-6.30 PM, SUN 9.30-6.00 PM[less]
Just go there and look around, you never know what specials they'll have next. If you ask nicely, they might even do better deals than what's currently on offer. You can subscribe to their online mailing list and they'll email you a flyer of current or upcoming specials.
This company had been recommended to me and their price was below what other companies charged; a fair, but reasonable price. The truck turned up on time and the removal men were caring and thoughtful. They even reduced the price a little, as Mum is a pensioner. They made the move for my Mum much easier and were respective of her items. I cannot recommend them enough. Our move was local, but they do longer runs as well.[less]
I just asked! Their price is pretty much as it is, as they supply two men and a truck and are unable to cut the price for anyone, but a pensioner. Their hourly price was lower than other companies that I phoned for the same job, in a similar area.
I just discovered this great little computer shop which is run by Michael Ollis. My computer crashed and died on me and at first he quoted me $399 for a brand new laptop with all the bells and whistles. The next day however he actually talked me into trying an $80 repair on my old laptop with an assurance that, if it didn't work he would take the $80 off the price of a new one. Well, it did work! My computer is like new now.
I also discovered that he mends Smartphones too and his accessories are the least expensive I've seen anywhere. For example, his blank DVD's are $20 for 100, cheaper even than ALDI.
Truly a hidden gem!![less]
All you need to do to get a great price from this guy is to show up! He is honest, trustworthy and does good work.
I have found a butcher in the western suburbs of Melbourne that is not only cheap, but great quality too.
For example, I have purchased a bulk lot of chicken wings which was just over 2kg for $3.56, which is three dinners for me and my husband. I then saw chicken wings in Coles and they were asking $4.00 per kilo!
I also purchased a size 16 chicken for $4.99 and again saw a chicken in Coles, which was smaller, for $9.59.
They stock all sorts of meat, including whole sides, rumps and so on, which the on-site butcher will then slice for you at no extra cost.
Their smallgoods are also fabulous, and they stock all sorts of deli meats, cheeses and dips.
There is also a section of general groceries and frozen foods, which again are so much cheaper. Just take the 1 litre of extra virgin olive oil for $6.99.
And if you have a senior or aged pension card, there is a 10% discount for you on a Wednesday.
Since we have discovered this place we no longer buy meat anywhere else, and we are saving so much money![less]
Every day is a bargain here! There is a great range to choose from (see the website), customer service is always good and the people who run the store are always helpful in finding the right product and price. Well worth a visit if you're in the city![less]
There are huge savings to be made on a great selection of everyday essentials here. Staff are friendly and always ready to help. I have noticed you can save as much as 70-80% compared with other big stores![less]
Look around and compare the prices yourself. Whenever I visit the store I always find a bargain!
If you have ever had to use storage then you'll know it is of variable quality. What struck me about Milton James and the team is that their customer service is second to none, and they run the place cleanly and efficiently. When we moved about 18 months ago we had to conquer the confusing task of choosing a storage box size and they helped us choose an option that suited our needs and didn't cost us as much as other options. Recently we went in to move some boxes and pack others and instead of selling us the more expensive boxes and fillers Milton helped us to buy a good quality used box and pack it well with newspaper. They offer great advice and make it a very pleasant experience.[less]
These guys are kind and helpful any time.
Riverside Christian Church run an op shop as well as a foodbank from this address. You do not have to have a health care card to receive a food package and no questions are asked on why you need help, just a simple name and address etc is taken on your first visit, due to Government regulations) The op shop is very reasonably priced and regularly have brand name items come through the door. It is a place where you have to search through to find that perfect piece - but what op shop isn't a bit like that? Whilst at the centre stay for a free cuppa and biscuit (during foodbank hours only)[less]
All staff are more than happy to give you a good deal. And food will always be free, you can't get a much better deal than that!
Foodbank is open Mon, Wed, Fri from 10-12.
Op Shop is open all day depending on volunteer availability.
CERES fairfood is a community group supplying organic, locally owned freshly picked fruit and vegies. You can buy mixed boxes or just order what you want. They deliver to heaps of locations or 'food hosts' where you can pick up your order. I've found it great for adding variety to my diet, and it has saved me heaps! I purchase a $35 small mixed box and it keeps me going for two weeks, which stops me hitting the supermarket as well! They have minimal packaging, and you return your box for them to re-use.[less]
You can also join CERES for $50 and receive a 10 per cent discount at their on-site nursery (not online food orders) or for any classes you would like to do - like cheesemaking! If you follow them on Facebook they keep you updated on any news and what is in season also.
Birchip Bakery is on the main street in Birchip (Sunraysia Hwy). They have excellent pies. their coffee is great - but the ultimate indulgence is the vanilla slice - to die for! It is clean and the staff are lovely. On Fridays they do a ciabatta bread that is equal to anything you can get in Melbourne. Well worth a visit if you are driving through.[less]
They bake the usual array of breads - day old bread is put in a basket and sold for $2, it is still lovely and fresh and incredibly superior to cheap supermarket bread. Additionally, this bread freezes really well.
Shoestring Market is full to the brim, floor to ceiling and spilling out onto the footpath with inexpensive hardware, kitchenware, baskets and containers, gift boxes, wrapping and ribbons all too numerous to list. Your eyes are overwhelmed with variety. This is the place to find the odd and unusual for super cheap prices. A real treasure trove. The owner is always very helpful and full of suggestions to achieve many of my oddball requests to make fabulous things out of cheap bits and pieces - such as my Christmas decorations last year![less]
Always a good deal - couldn't do better!
Booth's Cafe is part of the Bairnsdale Salvation Army Corps. They have delicious home made meals pies, pasties and hot meals. They make the best coffees and all their prices are very reasonable. As a bonus when you finish your lunch, you can visit the Salvos op shop all under the one roof![less]
The ladies are mostly volunteers, and are always friendly and cheerful, it is just a great place to visit. I go there each week, and when the staff see me at the counter, they start making my sandwich!
Legends on Hansen is great! We go there at least twice a week; most of the locals meet there for coffee and tea. The meals are cheap and beautifully presented, the chairs are comfy and the decor is great. You can eat inside, or if you prefer to eat outside there are tables outside on the footpath or you can sit in the lovely courtyard. The staff are all extremely friendly and nothing is too much of a bother. One of the best places in North East Victoria, Legends is a great stop before or after heading for the Snowy Mountains
Any time is the best time for price and they always have specials for lunch. This varies according to the seasons. It is one of the cheapest places to eat in town and the value for money is great. They are very generous sizes too!
This butcher is our favourite! They consistently have skin-on chicken fillets for $6.99 on special.
All the staff are really nice and fun (don't ask for a leg of lamb without thinking whether you want left or right!). They've won lots of retail awards and really care about their customers. They also have lots of competitions, taste testing and recipes.
Rainbow Meats also have branches at Chadstone, Camberwell and Caroline Springs.[less]
Don't forget to ask for your loyalty card as once reach the required points you receive $25 worth of free meat!
I have been going to Cafe 56 for years now. They make the nicest Chinese food and the meal prices are so cheap. For lunch they offer a large plate with your choice of three meats/vegies and rice or noodles from the hot box for under $7. IOr you can choose from about 15 other meals with rice for $7.80. They don't cook a lot of food at once, so it is always served fresh.[less]
Their prices are always the same. The lunch deal is 11.30am - 2pm. They have the $7.80 meals all day. We took some friends that were visiting there and it was under $70 for 7 of us and we even had food left!
Provincial Meats in Mernda has a gigantic selection of meats at great prices. They have a wide variety of pre-packaged meats (including deli meats) or you can select your own from the butchery. You can get almost any cut of good quality meat for a reasonable price and they also have plenty of bulk buy specials if you want to snap up a bargain.[less]
Bulk buying is the best way to get a great price at this store.
Albert's Cafe is absolutely superb in all respects: food, service, ambience and value for money! The food is to die for, the ambience is wonderful and their service rivals a 5-star restaurant. The cafe is tucked away off the main road in a gorgeous Victorian country town. And their prices are VERY reasonable! They're family friendly with high chairs available. I just wish it was closer as we'd be there weekly! I have told all our friends they must detour into Euroa to visit Albert's! There is easy parking available in Binney Street.[less]
No need to charm the staff - theyarenaturally charming! Every day is special there!
Modern Munchkins Cloth Nappies sells nappies, inserts, liners, animal backpacks, lunch bags, and more. They are friendly and helpful and have lots of different ways to save. Plus, they post to all states in Australia.[less]
Modern Munchkins Cloth Nappies has regular sales and a bulk buying discount.
This is a farm outlet where they sell very cheap fruit in season, mainly apples and pears. For example, I picked up eight kilos of seconds apples for just $6.00. The only reason they are seconds is because of their small size but this smaller size is perfect for kids. Pears were $5.00 a box. You are able to pick up smaller weights of fruit but I use the bulk bag fruit for juicing, stewing and drying. Don't expect a huge range of produce, but what they do have is Australian grown, good quality and dirt cheap.[less]
This is a factory outlet selling mainly Clark's children's shoes including old stock, samples and seconds. They also sell ladies shoes, but the best bargains are available in the kids' range. The prices are fantastic for top quality kids shoes - usually half the retail price and often less!
As it's a factory outlet they don't offer the usual Clark's fitting service but if you are unsure you could try on the shoes in another shop then visit the outlet.[less]
I discovered this wonderful find while exploring our new neighbourhood. They are the factory retailers of pies, quiches, sausage rolls, and some sweet things (slices, muffins) that are made for shops and airlines. Usually they are seconds, but the quality is fantastic - best pies I've had and I wouldn't buy anywhere else now. It's always a bit random what is there, as it depends on what they've had orders for. They have a great deal which seems to be always going, of 'buy two packets, get one free'. Everything goes in the freezer and lasts for months and months (if not eaten within the first week of buying!). The staff are very helpful and always make sure that you get the best value (i.e. if you are buying two items, they tell you to go back and get your "free" packet). They have also advised me on the best time to get sausage rolls as my daughter loves them. My mother now stops in there too every time she visits us to stock up her freezer again![less]
Always go for the 'buy two get one free' as this really makes the items so cheap. They are the first shop-bought pies with recognisable chunks of meat and vegetables that I've eaten in a long time!
Bendigo Woollen Mills sells the most beautiful, high quality knitting wool in 200g balls. They come in a variety of colours and plys - check out their website to get an idea of the range. I have just ordered enough wool (4 balls) to knit a pure wool long line cardigan for my daughter-in-law for $48 with free postage. I have used them before and can recommend their products and service. They will send you samples of their colour range and latest wools on request.[less]
Everyone gets a great price not just me. You can visit the mill but I live too far away so they don't get to experience my charm!
Everyone needs to feel confident when dropping their shoes off to be repaired and for that reason alone I'd recommend Glenferrie shoe repairs. However these guys have redefined for me what a shoe repairer can do, and saved me hundreds of dollars in the process!
At first I just brought my shoes in to have heels repaired, but they soon showed me they could also repair the inside lining of my shoes as well, that in itself has saved me $100 on a new pair of hiking shoes. Their 'can-do' attitude and patience have encouraged me to bring in all manner of goods such as bags and sewing kits, all of which they've repaired professionally at a great price.
Their best service to me so far has been to repair my orthotics. The leather lining had worn off, but the orthotics themselves were still fine. Glenferrie shoe repair sourced and ordered in orthotic foam especially for me, as well as replacing the leather upper in only a couple of days so I wouldn't be without my orthotics for long. Given a new pair would cost at least $400 I'm now definitely an evangelist for the service these guys provide![less]
I've never asked for a particular price, but I've always found their fees to be realistic and reasonable.
Savers has good second-hand quality products such as shoes, clothing, handbags, furniture and baby items. These sorts of second-hand stores are hidden gems as they sit at the back of peoples minds but are always worth a visit, and often the money helps support a charity.[less]
Always look for marks on clothing, missing buttons, rips in material and so on,you can then negotiate to have the price reduced.
My husband buys beef for our spit roast for $8.00 per kilo. Great place![less]
Peter and Joanne run a nice little business here. They sell Canon inks at amazing prices. The inks I need are only $15.95 each! So thrilled to find brand name inks at such a fab price![less]
Canon Inks at $15.95. No specials this is the price they sell at!
The service is basic, but the choice can be fantastic! There are lots and lots of fabrics, everything from lycra to fur! There are also lots of knit/stretch fabrics at greatly reduced prices and lots of fabrics at around $4.00 per metre (some even available at $2.00!). The lycra is around $10 per metre.
You may not get the choice of colours in fabric types, but they are still priced pretty low! You can also find laces, buttons, elastics and decorative edging (again, colours limited to what is available). The stock can change quite often, some stock is 'seconds' so be careful in making your choice - make sure you buy enough to finish your item! The minimum purchase is one metre.[less]
Resource Rescue is a bargain art and craft store. All products are items rescued from entering landfill (so it's good for the environment as well as the wallet!). It is a great place to visit for party supplies and decorations as well as craft items, even gifts.
I like to stock up before school holidays so the kids are kept busy making and creating. You'll find Peter in the store is super friendly and full of useful advice and ideas. The store is also open to playgroups and kindergartens. A true hiddem gem, my son calls Resource Rescue 'the treasure place'.[less]
Bargains are available all the time! No charming required.
Russell Athletic Outlet is a fantastic Hidden Gem! It is not a huge shop, but we found a great pair of footy boots for our son for just $29! We compared the prices with Rebel Sport which were up to $200 for Auskick!
They also sell a great range of sports shorts, t-shirts, hoodies and so on from a range of brands at excellent reductions. My daughter bought a 'Russell Athletic' new season hoodie for $25, in Rebel Sport they were double the price for the same thing! You have to go there if you need any sporty outfits... before you pay top dollar elsewhere! The staff were friendly, young and happy to help.[less]
Their prices are always good compared to the bigger stores!
Boutique Relove is a second-hand clothing store. However, the owner only selects fashion pieces that are in top condition. They have a Facebook page where the staff take photos of the latest items and outfits that might work for you.
They allow you to bring in some of your own clothes from home (good quality items you don't need anymore), and they will sell them for you, giving you 40 percent commission.
The staff feel this is good for them as it gives them a job, good for the consumer as it helps empty a wardrobe, good for the community as it offers good clothes at reasonable prices and good for the environment as it stops waste![less]
It is an op shop of sorts so the prices are well below retail. While not as cheap as some op shops, the items I have seen and bought have been new (with tags still on), and definitely good prices for new.
I love the Dandenong Market because the bulk-buy fruit, meat, vegies and seafood lasts us (two adults, three kids, one dog and numerous visitors!) at least a month. They also have clothing stores that save us a fortune in clothes. Some of my friends do toy shopping there as well. The store runners are pretty nice and open to haggling. If you go through a lot of food and want to save a bit of money, the Dandenong Market makes that possible.[less]
We go late on a Saturday afternoon. The fruit and vegie section is open to negotiating a better deal if you buy lots of boxes. The meat section has great deals such as 4kg of mince for $20, 2kg of chicken thighs for $16 and so on. If you buy $50 worth of food at one stall, ask for a discount. We think it's a pretty good way to save money!
If you love sweets, lollies or chocolate... this is the shop for you! Especially if you love to save money and still buy top quality lollies and chocolate! This is the best shop to find a cheap surprise for you or your hubby, kids and friends or gifts for teachers that you need to buy for but don't want to spend a fortune on! For example my favourite - Terry's Orange Special Edition selection - normally $29, but at Sweet As it's only $3.95!
The store is presented very well so it's easy to find all your yummy 'needs' and wants without having to go up and down many aisles searching! The staff are very friendly and happy to help. They even gift wrap for free if requested![less]
There is no secret to get a special deal. Every day of the year you will find top quality chocolates, boxed gift sets, bulk bagged lollies and so on for the best prices.
Do yourself a favour....find this store!
The Grey Outdoors Leisure Tours is a small business run by Sandy and Rob Higgins. It's a 12-seater bus tour operation that caters for anyone over 50. Their motto is no wrinkles - no ride!
They pick you up at your door in Geelong and Bellerine areas and drop you off at home after the trip. Morning tea is often included in the trip and sometimes lunch.
Some of the great places we've been to are the Carribean Gardens Market and Daylesford Market. They also do trips interstate via plane and ferry and have mystery trips, morning melodies, Sunday roasts at a nice country pub and lots more![less]
The Mill Markets at Daylesford is a huge second hand shop in the back streets of Daylesford. It's open seven days a week from 10am to 6pm. The Markets are filled with multiple stallholders selling an enormous array of goods. It is the best place for quality recycled clothing, shoes, bags, jewellery and so on for the whole family, from vintage to modern styles at very low prices. There are household goods from every era including vintage and retro furniture, old tools, boxes and tins. There are also antiques and collectables at far cheaper prices than major city antique shops (and the shops in Daylesford's main street!). You can browse at your own pace with no pressure and there are friendly staff walking the floor if you need assistance - they even ask if they can carry your selections to the counter so you can keep browsing in comfort! I have been there a number of times and it is always changing. There is even a small cafe and restrooms. You can often catch a great special if a stallholder is closing down - crazy prices just to clear their stall. It's a great place to bag a bargain - I love it![less]
You can often catch a great special if a stallholder is closing down - crazy prices just to clear their stall. It's a great place to bag a bargain - I love it!
Established in 1947, Higgins Bakery is a traditional bakery with a modern touch. It is still a part of the Higgins Family and is now run by Mat Higgins, the grandson of the infamous Ron Higgins.
Mat's Christmas puddings are something truly special! They are baked in a container, then sealed in an airtight lid and wrapped in cloth. The baking is already done so on Christmas day all you need to do is remove the lid and warm it in the microwave. The taste is magnificent and your family and friends will think you've slaved away for hours baking the most delicious and traditional pudding for them! The cost of the pudding is just $18 and well worth it considering the cost of purchasing your own ingredients, the cost of electricity and the cost of your own time.[less]
Higgins Bakery is in Shepparton - great for the people of the Goulburn Valley region.
This is a guy in his '60s who runs a small business from home. He has all sorts of manure and garden soil for sale but recently he has branched out into garden things.
I have purchased three raised garden beds from him at a much lower price than I could buy in any shop, and they are all made with treated pine. He only charges $10 for delivery.
I have also had him make me a chicken shed and run. He custom-made the shed to fit in the limited space I had available, then delivered and installed it, including the wire for the run. He has since made and installed a gate so I can let them free-range in a part of the garden.
He also makes kitchens, toys and other furniture.[less]
He can be found in Marshall just off the Barwon Heads Road in Station Road. Going there from Geelong, you cross the railway line, turn sharp left and it's the first yard you come to on the left. Most of the time there's someone in the yard, if not John, his wife or other people. You can contact him by phone on 0437 079 114.
He is a down-to-earth typical old-fashioned guy in his '60s. I have found him to be scrupulously honest and have no hesitation in recommending him.
I recently discovered Fresh on Young, a fruit and vegie shop, and was very impressed!
Their fruit and vegie prices are a lot cheaper than Coles or Woolworths. In fact I would say their prices are very similar to that of Queen Victoria Market or any of the other markets in Melbourne. Not only do they have a great variety of fruit and vegies, but also meats, cheese, free-range eggs and more.
The staff are always happy and smiling and very friendly indeed. That's where I will be doing my fruit and vegie shopping from now on![less]
If you live in Melbourne or are planning on visiting, I would suggest going and having a look at Suga, is a small candy store in Bourke St Mall.
They make all of their own candy and show you how it is done. You can even create your own design.
Today when I went there it seemed to be very popular and is a great activity for kids in the school holidays. They also have other stores in Melbourne which you can find on their website.[less]
When I first moved to Melbourne, a friend told me about 'Lentil as Anything'. It is a not-for-profit community organisation where you pay what you think the meal is worth. I went for a meal at the St Kilda 'Lentil as Anything' to check it out! The restaurant is run by volunteers and it is a bit of an alternative/hippy restaurant with a Moroccan theme.
I really liked it as it was something different and the volunteers were lovely and have been very attentive every time I have visited. I can take a seat anywhere I like and they will often bring me out a menu and a glass of water. The food is really good and suitable for both vegetarians and vegans, and they also serve food that is gluten free.[less]
There are no set prices. They have a box on the counter and you put your donations into that. There is more information on their website.
This warehouse-style fruit and vegetable shop has a huge variety of cheap fruit and vegetables, as well as an excellent range of Italian products. They have great prices on tinned tomatoes and pulses as well as passata and bulk flour (12.5kg for $15).
They also have meat, dairy and frozen products as well as bulk herbs, spices, dried fruit, dried pulses and cleaning products.
They really have a great range of products at good prices, and you don't need to buy in bulk. Their hours are 8am to 5pm, Wednesday to Sunday.[less]
Check out the specials bagged up at the front of the store. I have bought almost 2kg of mushrooms for $3.00, 2kg of bananas for $1.00 (a little black on the outside but perfect inside), and many more great deals.
This is an excellent way to get to see shows in Melbourne at an amazingly cheap price.
'On The House' is a company that gets production tickets (these are the promotional tickets or are sold when a show wants to fill a venue or has a preview) for shows mostly in Melbourne but sometimes for other cities in Australia. Most tickets are between $2.50 and $7.00 each, often a saving of about $15-20 per ticket and the shows tend to be in smaller venues in and around the CBD.
The website is very easy to use and it is just like buying regular tickets online, but instead of getting a physical ticket, you have to go to the box office on the night and tell them that you have tickets 'on the house'. If you can't attend, you just have to let 'On The House' know ahead of time.
We have been to comedy, cabaret, theatre and music events. The best part is that the more people who know about 'On The House', the more publicity they can get and the more tickets that are available.[less]
Get in early! 'On The House' sends out emails fairly regularly with their new events. It's worth checking back on their website frequently to see what is new. Some of the tickets sell out really quickly, especially if they have a small allocation, but often new dates/times become available. Sometimes you can plan ahead, but often tickets are available for tonight or the next couple of nights, so if you have a night free it is worth checking back to see what is on.
Offering an ongoing selection of the most commonly used fruit and vegetables, plus a rotation of 'seasonal' options, this is my local go-to for day to day fruit and veg.
The produce is excellent quality and keeps well. The majority is Australian grown. Their standard prices are fair, and they offer weekly specials on some products. There is also a discount rack where I regularly nab bags of reduced but perfectly good produce.
The excellent service is the icing on the cake. I can park the car literally outside their main door, and have help carrying all the shopping back to the car and loading it up! Added bonus - they are great with the kids who come and 'help' me.[less]
Watch the painted windows out the front for weekly specials, and always check the 'reduced' rack just inside the main door to score some real bargains.
This fruit & vegetable store sells all the usual varieties for a fraction of the price. Last week I bought four 500g punnets of strawberries for $3.00! They have fabulous weekly specials, are central within Ballarat and open every day. The staff are always friendly and have quick service. They accept cash only, which is why they can charge less (and it helps me with my budget). I rarely pay over $25 for enough fruit and veg for a family of six for a week, but I do take advantage of specials to help with this.[less]
I shop a little more frequently as the produce does not always last as long and often need to pick through the apples to find the best ones.
They have just opened a second store at the corner of Howitt and Dowling Streets, Wendouree 3355.
A great range of nuts, seeds, grains, dried fruit, baking ingredients and sweets at excellent prices.
If you have a lolly buffet in mind for a special party, this is the place - you can buy a range of sweets in single colours.[less]
